Tips for a Great Party

Posted on: April 10, 2012

As an event planner I always advise my clients (especially the overly anxious type) when planning a party or event to begin with the end in mind.  To get a little deeper, think of think of the type of energy you want at your party and plan accordingly.

Here are some more helpful tips to make the party happen harmoniously.

  1. Don’t complicate the food.  It’s a great to have an unusual appetizer or a trendy entree to get people talking, but don’t over do it.  You’d be surprised how traditional party foods like chips and salsa with a tasty twist can go a long way.  Use blue corn tortilla chips along with yellow and white, serve hot, medium, and mild salsa.
  2. Be cool.  Take it easy, you’re the host!  The point of any party is to have fun. There’s nothing worse than a sweaty, stressed out host or hostess still wearing baggy sweat pants and a tee shirt when the party starts.  Remember that you’re there to have fun too.
  3. Know your audience, in this case, your party guests.  That statement may be overused, but it’s true!  If you plan on playing drinking games and dancing until you sweat, don’t invite your bible-thumping aunt and uncle.  Yes, they’re very sweet and they’ve known you since you were a child, but in the end they will very uncomfortable when your friends you went to school with have too many shots and start hooking up with your neighbors.
  4. Don’t forget the hook.  Give your party guests something to remember.  Whether it’s an unusual dish, a cool party favor, or an awesome performance (by a professional), make them want to come to your next party.
